English for higher education studies (5 cr)

Objective

The students can communicate understandably in English in different kinds of written and spoken language situations of the chosen field. The students improve their English skills and know how to use English language materials relevant for higher education studies.

Content

The course includes the basics of the English language. It also offers the chance to practice different field-related oral and written communication situations and to increase the courage to use the English language. An essential target is to produce clear, logical and readable texts in different styles. The material used in spoken and written tasks is related to the chosen field. In addition, the students develop their language learning techniques (e.g. reading professional texts, studying vocabulary).

Study forms and methods

The course comprises scheduled lessons, small-group work, and independent and group learning assignments. Students and are divided into groups based on skill level.

Online lessons are scheduled on a regular basis and entail teacher-led study as well as small-group exercises. Students are required to participate actively in online lessons and small-group exercise.

Teacher's guidance is available during and immediately after online lessons.

Study materials and instructions are provided on the Learn platform. Access to the platform opens on the start date of the course. Online lessons are arranged via Teams. Participation requires not only an internet connection, but also a video and audio connection.

The course comprises assignments that are assessed either individually or as a group performance. Assignments must be submitted by given deadlines.

Different feedback methods are utilized in the course. These may include, for example, written and oral feedback from the teacher and peer feedback.

Timing of exams and assignments

The course comprises scheduled online lessons, small-group learning tasks and individual assignments. A more detailed schedule is found on the Learn platform. The course ends on the date indicated on Peppi, and by this date all mandatory assignments must be completed.

1 ECTS credits equals 27 hours of work by the student, i.e. in a 5-credit course the student's total maximum workload is approximately 135 hours including lessons and group work as well as independent study.

Further information

This course is first and foremost a part of the Higher Education Preparatory Program for Immigrants Studies (30 ECTS). In special cases, participation is possible for the degree students of Xamk, whose level of skills is in accordance with the objectives of the course.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

PASS
Student has achieved the course objectives. Student is able to identify and use the course subject area’s concepts and to put to use his/her knowledge and skills.

FAIL

Student has not achieved the course objectives. Student is able to identify and use only a few course subject area’s concepts and cannot put to use his/her knowledge.

Assessment methods and criteria

The completion of the course requires active participation in online lessons and small-group exercises, and passing grades for individual and group assignments.
