You can monitor and assess patients' conditions systematically.
You can implement nursing interventions.
You know the principles of rehabilitative nursing by applying ergonomics and kinaesthetics.
You know how to ensure the continuity of care with high-quality reporting and recording.
You master CPR and the use of advisory defibrillators.
You can act in situations requiring first aid.
You know how to encounter and treat dying patients and support their loved ones.
You identify the signs of impending death and know how to care for patients after dead.

How to use the ABCDE protocol to assess patients' wellbeing?
How to use the NEWS criteria for the early identification of disorders in basic vital functions?

How to observe the principles of rehabilitative nursing?

Study forms and methods

Training in Hoitotaitojen perusosaamisen harjoittelu: in-school training. The topics and content material for the practice days can be found in the Learn module of the Hoitotaitojen perusosaaminen -course. In-school practice is part of the EU nurse's statutory compulsory clinical training. Every hour of training is compulsory.


An accelerated learning pathway:
Students who have completed a previous professional qualification in health care and are working can complete the practical part of the course through the recognition and validation of competences. You will get information about this on the first theoretical lessons.


Ergonomics skills (0,5 credits):
A valid Ergonomics Card for Patient Transfers 3op entitles the student to accept the ergonomics component

Documentation
Students who have completed a previous professional qualification in health care and are working can complete the practical part of the documentation through the recognition and validation of competences (exam).

RDI and work-related cooperation

The basic nursing skills exercises use examples from working life in patient case studies and simulation exercises.

Possible expert lectures or working life visits.

Timing of exams and assignments

Assessment of Hoitotaitojen perusosaaminen exercises: assessment of nursing skills which are coming up during practice sessions. In addition, assessment of overall competence of about 1.5h per student at the end of the course.

Ergonomics skills:
* Application of case exercises, e.g:
* Functional capacity assessment and activation
* Supporting rehabilitation
* Assessment of rehabilitation and assessment of physical activity
* Patient transfer aids and their safe use
* Initial positioning
* Safety in the operating environment
* Risk assessment
* Working postures; walking posture, weight transfer
* Performance-based oral reporting
* Kinesthetics

Aseptic procedures (theory part in the second course)
- Basics of asepsis
- Hand hygiene, personal hygiene, cleaning, waste management
- Precautions in patient care
- Identifying the risk of infection
- Sterile gloves and table


Basic nursing care and prevention of pressure ulcers
- Basic care assistance methods and aids
- Assisting with personal hygiene, pressure ulcer prevention.

Basics of wound care

Assessment and support of respiration
- Monitoring and examination of breathing, assessment of airway openness
- Respiratory failure, dyspnoea, risk of aspiration
- Observation of clinical signs
- Oxygenation equipment and mask ventilation
- Aspiration of mucus from airways and tracheostoma

Urinary tract catheterisation and bowel function promotion
- Monitoring urination, maintaining urinary tract function (catheterisation and urine opening)
- Monitoring and promoting bowel function (listening to bowel sounds, emptying bowels, treating bowel obstruction)

Care of the dying patient
- Recognising signs of impending death
- Caring for the dying patient, putting the deceased to bed and meeting relatives

Monitoring and calculating fluid balance, administering basic fluid therapy
- Fluid therapy, selection of basal fluids
- Preparation of infusion

Nutritional assistance
- Enteral nutrition and tube feeding

Basic caring skills: participation in compulsory caring skills exercises at school. At the end of the course, assessment of competence: pass/fail.
