You are able to plan a research project and formulate the research questions.
You are able to select and justify suitable qualitative and quantitative methods for a given project.
You are able to select and apply appropriate data analysis techniques.
You are able to evaluate the quality of your own research.
You are able to apply ethical principles in research work.
Content
How to generate new ideas for research?
How to formulate the research question properly?
What are the different qualitative and quantitative research methods?
How to analyze the collected data through various procedures?
How to determine if the study is reliable, valid and ethical?
Course material
The course materials consists of lecture notes and materials posted in the Learn platform.
The following textbook is an example of recommended supplementary material:
Saunders, M., Lewis, P. & Thornhill, A., 2016. Research Methods for Business Students. Essex: Pearson Education Limited.
Study forms and methods
This implementation has been requested to be arranged as contact hour based at Kouvola campus.
Individual study tracks may be negotiated with the instructor and they are subject to student's realistic capability and competences about the subject area.
RDI and work-related cooperation
The assignments support students’ thesis work. The individual tasks may be part of students’ own projects e.g development work at their own organizations. Guest lecturers and company related projects are possible.
Timing of exams and assignments
Two exams will be arranged as follows.
- one quantitative
- one qualitative
If it show to be practical, there may be additional mid-term exams.
All the exams will be announced on course Learn platform.

The amount of work for a 5 ECTS course can be budgeted as follows: 27h * 5 = 135 h
Course part description
Qualitative research methods: Research process, Data gathering, Data analysis, Reporting the study & reliability of the study.
Quantitative research methods: Statistics, Excel, SPSS and/or other relevant tools

1-5
Assessment methods and criteria
The course is assessed by mid-term exams whereby students collect points for the final course grade. Additional peer evaluations may be applied if it appears practical.
Minimum to pass the course is 50% of the points.
