Objective

You can actively use the basic vocabulary of your own field in English.

You can act in English in different communication situations in your field at the European skill level B2.

You can search for information in English-language sources and apply it to study and work.

Content

What essential professional vocabulary do you need?
How do you search information in sources of your field and apply it?
How do you act in English in spoken communication situations and compose texts needed in your field?
How do you communicate in English in the study community and in the workplace?

Course material

Study materials are provided by the teacher via the Learn platform.

Study forms and methods

• The implementation entails 5 contact lessons on campus and unscheduled online study.
• The students must complete mostly individual assignments and one group assignment.
• The course involves one seminar presentation that can be held either during the contact period or in a Teams meeting.
• Feedback is provided by different methods, in writing and/or orally. Also, peer feedback can be used.

Timing of exams and assignments

Assignments have suggested submission dates.
The final submission date for all assignments is 30 November.
At the end of the course there is an oral demonstration (group discussion) in Teams, for which the students shall book a time slot.
The written exam is in the Exam aquarium 1 December 31 December.

Student workload

• 1 ECTS credits equals 27 hours of work by the student.
• In a 5-credit course, the student's total maximum workload is approximately 135 hours including lessons, group work and independent study.

If you have been recommended the English prep course based on the placement test, it is highly recommended to complete it before participating in this course.

Evaluation scale

1-5

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam has a 60% weight in the course grade.
The oral examination has a 40% weight in the course grade.
Both must be passed.
The assignments to be returned and the seminar must be completed with a passing grade (graded pass/fail).

Qualifications

The student can communicate independently in communication situations (level B1).
