Objective

You are able to systematically use the concepts of mechanics to solve physical and technical problems both theoretically and experimentally.

You master the basic concepts and calculations of chemistry and are able to apply your skills to your professional studies and requirements of working life.

Content

What are the key phenomena, quantities, units, definitions and laws of nature in mechanics? How can you use them to solve problems related to physics and technical engineering? How can you measure physical quantities, study the laws of nature and report the measurements?

What are the basic chemical quantities, units, definitions and natural laws? How is matter constructed? What happens when a chemical reaction occurs? What is the difference between inorganic and organic compounds? How are the chemical compounds divided into groups and how are they named? What are the properties of chemical substances?

Course material

Physics section:

The material provided on the course's Learn page. The material is partly based on the book Insinöörin (AMK) fysiikka, Part 1, Hautala & Peltonen, 12th edition, 2016. Older editions are also acceptable. However, the production of this book has been discontinued, and it can be replaced with the new book Tekniikan fysiikka, Kari Suvanto, which covers practically the same content.

Chemistry section:
The material provided on the course's Learn page. The material is based on the book Tekniikan kemia, Hänninen, Karppinen, Leskelä & Pohjakallio, 16th revised edition, 2022. Older editions are also acceptable.

Study forms and methods

Physics section: Independently watched theory videos and guided exercise sessions.
Chemistry section: Theory lessons and practice exercises.

RDI and work-related cooperation

Does not contain.

Timing of exams and assignments

The physics section exam can be retaken 2 times.
The chemistry section exam can be retaken 2 times.

Student workload

1 credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of student work. However, the workload depends on the student's study skills and prior knowledge.
In a 5-credit course, the student's workload is approximately 135 hours.

Course part description

Physics section includes:
Kinematics of linear and circular motion, Newton's dynamics, energy, work, and power.

Chemistry section includes:
States of matter, chemical equilibrium, reaction heat, acid-base reactions, electrochemistry, and corrosion.

Assessment methods and criteria

The course assessment is based on the evaluation of the physics and chemistry sections. In both the physics and chemistry sections, the emphasis is placed on exam performance.
