Objective

You are familiar with the bioproduct and chemical industry companies and actor networks and the current public control measures that guide the industry. You know typical bioproduct and chemical industry manufacturing processes and the products obtained from them. The aim of the course is to orient the student to the bioproduct and chemical industry.

Content

What kinds of companies and networks operate in the bioproduct and chemical industry?
How do current public programs and strategies guide the industry's operations?
What are the basic bioproduct processes and the products they yield?
What are the manufacturing processes and products in basic chemical industry like?

Course material

The following source materials will be used in the course: KnowPap, KnowPulp, and ForestBioFact learning environments. Other study materials will be distributed during the implementation in the Learn environment.

Study forms and methods

Classroom teaching

RDI and work-related cooperation

Representatives from the working life may visit the course. It is also possible to make a working life visit during the course. Laboratory work will be conducted in the Kuitu 3 chemistry laboratory, which simulates environments similar to those in working life.

Timing of exams and assignments

Scheduling of exams and assignments:
The course does not include an exam.

The course includes assignments specific to each session. During the course, a few laboratory exercises and a report and presentation on the chemical industry will be completed in small groups, which must be submitted by the specified deadlines.

The course ends at the time indicated in the implementation details, by which the student must have successfully submitted the required assignments and written reports and presentations.

Student workload

1 ECTS credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of student work. However, the workload depends on study skills and prior knowledge. In a 5 ECTS credit course, the student’s workload is approximately 135 hours, of which about 56 hours are in-person lectures and group work under the teacher’s guidance, and about 79 hours are independent learning tasks.

Evaluation scale

1-5

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment is based on the learning objectives and evaluation criteria of the course. Successful completion of the course requires the satisfactory submission of assignments and the completion of reports with a passing grade.

Grading scale: 1–5
