Objective

This course, provides you with a comprehensive view on the functioning of water ecosystems and what threatens them. You also learn ways to protect water ecosystems and to understand the ecological importance of water, the preservation of the diversity of water bodies and the effects of water pollution. In addition, you study different water protection and restoration methods.

Content

What are the structure and function of water ecosystems like?

Which biological, chemical and physical factors influence the functioning of aquatic ecosystems?

What is water diversity?

What kinds of different species live in aquatic environments and what kind of interactions occur there?

What are the different sources of pollution in aquatic environments?

What are the effects of pollution on water ecosystems and their functioning?

What are the effects of water pollution on human health?

What kinds of protection and restoration methods are available to restore water bodies?

Course material

Study materials are provided by the teacher in class or via the Learn platform.

Study forms and methods

The course is carried out by way of contact teaching on Mikkeli campus according to a weekly schedule. Remote participation is not possible. As a rule, scheduled contact lessons are not recorded nor duplicated by online lectures. Some lesson activities are carried out in a laboratory/field environment. Participation in field exercises is mandatory.

RDI and work-related cooperation

Possible guest lectures will be given by representatives from the world of work.

Timing of exams and assignments

Evaluation of the course is based on an exam and a course tasks.

Student workload

1 ECTS credits equals 27 hours of work by the student. In a 5-credit course, the student's total maximum workload is approximately 135 hours including lessons, group work and independent study.
