Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- minimizing the risk of fire and maintaining a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire
- fighting and extinguishing fires

Content

- elements of fire and explosion, the fire triangle
- organization of shipboard fire-fighting
- location of fire-fighting appliances and emergency routes
- types and sources of ignition
- flammable materials, fire hazards and spread of fire
- need for constant vigilance
- actions to be taken on board ship
- fire and smoke detection and automatic alarm systems
- classification of fires and applicable extinguishing agents
The course includes a two-day basic fire-fighting practical exercise at a certified fire training centre.

100% attendance in instruction and exercises. Approved performance.

Further information

Participation in all lessons and training sessions is obligatory. In addition, an approved completion of fire prevention and fire fighting course (STCW A-VI/1-2) is required.
