Intensive course in mathematics and physics (5 cr)

Objective

The course strengthens and provides the necessary skills for mathematics and physics studies in the fields of in technology.

Content

What practicing mathematical skills in and knowledge of physics is necessary for degree programme studies.
What are rational expressions and power and root expressions, and how are equations and the right-angle triangle solved?
What are the essential quantities and units in physics?
What is the international system of units?
How are unit conversions and quantity equations performed?
What are the basics of kinematics?

Course material

Lecture slides and notes, and exercise tasks. Possibly some other material, which will be declared during the course.

Study forms and methods

Learning takes place in-person, and the student participates in the teaching and guidance according to the schedule. The studies are structured around group meetings following the timetable and independent learning tasks. Since this is an intensive course, a significant amount of attendance and completing exercises in-class is required for the course.

RDI and work-related cooperation

There is no RDI- and worklife cooperation related to this course.

Timing of exams and assignments

The course uses continuous assessment on an electronic learning platform. Exercises are done in a weekly fashion. In addition, mid-term exams and/or a final exam will be held.

International cooperation

There will be no international cooperation during this course, other than the fact that the course will be lectured in English.

Student workload

The scope of the course is 5 credits, which corresponds to 135 hours of student work. Of this, approximately 55 hours are in-person learning, and the remaining 80 hours consist of independent work.

Assessment methods and criteria

To pass the course, a sufficient number of assignments must be completed on time, and the mid-term exams or final exam must be passed.
