Objective

You can actively use the basic vocabulary of your own field in English.

You can act in English in different communication situations in your field at the European skill level B2.

You can search for information in English-language sources and apply it to study and work.

Content

What essential professional vocabulary do you need?
How do you search information in sources of your field and apply it?
How do you act in English in spoken communication situations and compose texts needed in your field?
How do you communicate in English in the study community and in the workplace?

Course material

Study materials will be published on the Learn platform at the start of the course.

Study forms and methods

• The course starts with scheduled group meetings on campus (2 credits) and continues as instructed self-study both individually and in small groups (3 credits). The course consists of individual and small group tasks done during the lessons, as well as independent learning tasks on the Learn platform.
• Contact teaching is conducted on Mikkeli campus according to the schedule. Remote participation is not possible. As a rule, on-campus teaching is not recorded and is not replaced with online lectures when on-campus teaching is provided according to the schedule. Attendance is essential for the completion of the course.

RDI and work-related cooperation

The course enhances general working life skills.

Timing of exams and assignments

The course has both oral and written exercises and tasks which are done individually, in pairs and in small study groups. The course ends at the time announced in the course information by which these exercises and tasks need to be submitted.

Student workload

• 1 credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of student work. However, the workload depends on study skills and previous knowledge.
• For a 5-credit course, the student's workload is approximately 135 hours of which contact teaching for 30 hours and approximately 105 hours of independent work.

Assessment methods and criteria

Evaluation is made in relation to the learning objectives and assessment criteria of the course. The successful completion of the course requires the completion of assessed tasks with an approved grade.

The student can communicate independently in communication situations (level B1).
