Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- applying immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness on board
- providing medical care to the sick and injured while they remain on board
- radio medical contact ashore

Content

- first aid kit
- body structure and function
- toxicological hazards on board
- MFAG or its national equivalent
- examination of the injured and those who have fallen ill
- spinal injuries
- burns, scalds and effects of heat and cold
- fractures, dislocations and muscular injuries
- medical care of rescued persons
- radio medical advice
- pharmacology
- microbiological sterilization in shipboard conditions
- cardiac arrest, drowning and asphyxia

Materials

Approved training during studies

Further information

- Participation in all lessons and training sessions is obligatory.
- Scoring is based on demonstrations of competence performed by the student.
- After completed the course the student will receive the certificate: "Standard of competence for seafarers designated to provide medical first aid on board ship (STCW A-VI/4-1)" (including the Manila Agreement 2010).

Accomplishment methods

Students can
- use professional vocabulary and concepts in an expert way in different situations
- identify interrelated tasks
- use the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field
- apply critically the ethical principles of the professional field in different situations

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code tables A-II/1, A-III/1, A-III/6 and A-VI/4-1 columns 4 are used:
- the identification of probable cause, nature and extent of injuries or conditions is prompt and treatment minimizes immediate threat to life
- the identification of probable cause, nature and extent of injuries is prompt, complete and conforms to current first-aid practice
- risk of harm to self and to others is minimized at all times
- treatment of injuries and the patient’s condition is appropriate and conforms to recognized first-aid practice and international guidelines
