Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- maintaining and supervising the implementation of a ship security plan
- assessing security risks, threats, and vulnerabilities
- conducting regular inspections of the ship to ensure that appropriate security measures are implemented and maintained
- encouraging security awareness and vigilance
- the security operations of companies and ports and security awareness concerning company and port facilities
Content
- development, implementation, maintenance and supervision of ship security plans
- identification of threats and vulnerabilities and assessment of security risks
- inspection and monitoring of security measures on board ships and in port facilities
- operation, testing and calibration of security equipment and systems
- promotion of security awareness and vigilance of staff (ship and shore)
- planning of security training, drills and exercises

Further information
Participation in all lessons and training sessions is obligatory.
IMO model courses 3.19 (SSO), 3.20 (CSO) and 3.21 (PFSO) are utilized in course implementation.

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-VI/5 column 4 are used:
- procedures and actions are in accordance with the principles established by the ISPS Code and the SOLAS, 1974, as amended

- procedures achieve a state of readiness to respond to changes in maritime security levels
- communications within the ship security officer’s area of responsibility are clear and understood.
