Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- basics of materials and their properties used in mechanical engineering in various working conditions and under varying stresses
- special characteristics of most commonly used materials
Content
- composition of metals, iron carbon diagram, metal specific characteristics, applications, materials testing
- heat treatments
- steels, cast irons, aluminium alloys, construction metals, metal compounds, coatings, corrosion prevention, ceramics, composites, engineering plastics and rubbers

- look for information in the key information sources of the field
- use the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field
In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-III/1 column 4 are used:
- construction and operating mechanisms can be understood and explained with drawings/instruction.
- identification of important parameters for fabrication of typical ship-related components is appropriate
