Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- chemistry related to states of matter and gas laws
- hydrochemistry related to the operation of steam boilers, corrosion, and the chemical and physical behavior of fuels
- chemical work safety and environmental safety

Content

Chemical and physical properties of crude oil and marine fuel oils.
- viscosity and viscosity index
- flash point
- calorific value
- pour point
- cloud point
- carbon residue and ash
- water content
- acidity and alkalinity of oils
- laboratory tests and approval of fuels and oils

Chemical properties of seawater, cooling water, and boiler water. Electrochemical corrosion / corrosion in feed and cooling water as well as in wet steam and condensate components.

Maintaining the pH of cooling water and boiler water and the causes of changes:
- solids and fats in water
- dissolved hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide in water and their effects on boiler water
- hardness, salts
- silicon oxides in low and high-pressure boilers

Implementation and significance of water treatment in equipment use:
- measurement and permitted values; alkalinity and total alkalinity, chlorides, sulfites, phosphates, hardness, pH, dissolved oxygen, total solids, hydrazine

Feed water treatment and use of additives:
- hydrated lime, sodium carbonate
- phosphates, calcium and magnesium
- coagulants and colloidal suspensions
- anti-foaming agents
- corrosion and embrittlement

Chemical occupational safety and environmental aspects in the handling of fuels, lubricants, and technical waters.

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code tables A-II/1 and A-II/2 columns 4 are used:
- Explanation and understanding of design features and operating mechanisms are appropriate
- Construction and operating mechanisms can be understood and explained with drawings/instructions
