Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- principles of navigational aids
- determining errors made by navigational aids
- determining and allowing for compass errors

Ship's navigation aids:
- magnetic and gyro compass

- magnetic and gyro compass errors

Materials

- Simulator training at the operational level 1
- Simulator training at the operational level 2
- Approved training during studies

Accomplishment methods

Students can:
- use professional vocabulary systematically
- look for information in the key information sources of the field
- use the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code tables A-II/1 and A-II/2 column 4 are used:
- ability to operate the equipment and apply the information correctly
- performance checks and tests to navigation systems comply with manufacturer’s recommendations and good navigational practice
- errors in magnetic and gyro-compasses are determined and correctly applied to courses and bearings
- method and frequency of checks of errors of compasses ensures accuracy of information
