Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- ship handling in different conditions
- handling of different ship types
- anchoring and mooring in different conditions
- operating the vessel in all conditions using all available equipment, systems and resources
Content
- ship handling theory
- influence of wind
- current and shallow water and narrow fairways (SQUAT, bank effect, interaction/suction)
- steering and propulsion systems
- manoeuvring tests
- rate of turn and radius
- steering in rough weather, ice-covered waters and VTS areas

Accomplishment methods
Students can
- use professional vocabulary systematically
- evaluate information sources critically
- choose appropriate models, methods, software and techniques according to the purpose and justify these choices
- apply critically the ethical principles of the professional field in different situations
In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-II/2 column 4 are used:
- all decisions concerning berthing and anchoring are based on a proper assessment of the ship’s manoeuvring and engine characteristics and the forces to be expected while berthed alongside or lying at anchor
- while under way, a full assessment is made of possible effects of shallow and restricted waters, ice, banks, tidal conditions, passing ships and own ship’s bow and stern wave so that the ship can be safely manoeuvred under various conditions of loading and weather
