Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- responding to navigational emergencies and decision making based on risk assessment
- organizing and planning emergency drills and practices
- basics of damaged vessel control, structures and fire safety according to SOLAS II-2
- damaged ship assistance and salvage and salvaging conventions, and concepts of average and emergency towing

- precautions and actions in the event of beaching, grounding and refloating
- risk assessment and management
- check-list procedures in different emergencies
- organization and annual planning of drills and training
- utilization of accident investigation reports
- ship structures and compartmentalization
- fire fighting
- SOLAS II-2 and fire drills

Students can
- use professional vocabulary systematically

- apply critically the ethical principles of the professional field in different situations
In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code tables A-II/2 and A-III/2 columns 4 are used:
- the type and scale of any problem is promptly identified and decisions and actions minimize the effects of any malfunction of the ship’s systems
- communications are effective and comply with established procedures
- decisions and actions maximize safety of persons on board
- emergency procedures are in accordance with the established plans for emergency situations
