Training in Hoitotaitojen perusosaamisen harjoittelu: in-school training. The topics and content material for the practice days can be found in the Learn module of the Hoitotaitojen perusosaaminen -course. In-school practice is part of the EU nurse's statutory compulsory clinical training. Every hour of training is compulsory.
An accelerated learning pathway:
Students who have completed a previous professional qualification in health care and are working can complete the practical part of the course through the recognition and validation of competences. A single day of demonstration is allocated for this purpose at the beginning of the course during the orientation week. Instructions and a link for registration will be provided during the orientation week and/or in an electronic message sent by Xamk to new students.
Ergonomics skills (0,5 credits):
A valid Ergonomics Card for Patient Transfers 3op entitles the student to accept the ergonomics component
Documentation
Students who have completed a previous professional qualification in health care and are working can complete the practical part of the documentation through the recognition and validation of competences (exam).

Total workload 5 x 27h = 135 h. Campus days (1 - 2) about every two weeks. The school offers the opportunity to practice nursing activities independently.
Nursing skills (guided + independent):
Compulsory guided practice at school.

Ergonomics skills:
* Application of case exercises, e.g:
* Functional capacity assessment and activation
* Supporting rehabilitation
* Assessment of rehabilitation and assessment of physical activity
* Patient transfer aids and their safe use
* Initial positioning
* Safety in the operating environment
* Risk assessment
* Working postures; walking posture, weight transfer
* Performance-based oral reporting
* Kinesthetics
Aseptic procedures (theory part in the second course)
- Basics of asepsis
- Hand hygiene, personal hygiene, cleaning, waste management
- Precautions in patient care
- Identifying the risk of infection
- Sterile gloves and table
Basic nursing care and prevention of pressure ulcers
- Basic care assistance methods and aids
- Assisting with personal hygiene, pressure ulcer prevention.
Basics of wound care
Assessment and support of respiration
- Monitoring and examination of breathing, assessment of airway openness
- Respiratory failure, dyspnoea, risk of aspiration
- Observation of clinical signs
- Oxygenation equipment and mask ventilation
- Aspiration of mucus from airways and tracheostoma
Urinary tract catheterisation and bowel function promotion
- Monitoring urination, maintaining urinary tract function (catheterisation and urine opening)

Care of the dying patient
