Objective

After this study unit, a student is able to identify basic measurement and control principles explain basic instrumentation and motor loops compute linear calibration and tuning ranges explain the role of automation in process industries utilize and realize basic measurement and control applications based on programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Content

Processes and process descriptions Need of automation: measurement, control, on-off-valve, on-off-motor (pump, mixer etc) loops, and their functional loop descriptions. Basic analog and binary measurements Basic actuators: valves, pumps and motors. Communication from process sensors, transmitters and actuators to control systems and control rooms Linear and nonlinear calibration and tuning curves (0,5) Feedback control of temperature, pressure, level, flow Continuous and discrete PID algorithms (0,5) Components of distributed control systems (DCS) and programmable logic controllers (PLC), and control room operation principles Designing and programming of basic measurement and control applications, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) based on PLCs Siemens S7
