Osaamistavoitteet
The student will learn the basics of radio waves and antennas. The student will understand how radio waves propagate in free space, in terrestial radio connections and in waveguides. The student will learn how to estimate the transmitter power and receiver noise performance required for a successful radio connection.
Sisältö
What is a radio wave? How are radio waves generated by voltages and currents in an antenna? What is wavelength? Why and how is the performance of an antenna dependent on its mechanical dimensions? How can you calculate the energy that is picked up by the receiver antenna of a wireless connection (in optimum conditions)? How does the environment attenuate this energy (in practical conditions)? How much energy does the receiver need (in comparison to the electrical noise energy received from the environment and the electronic components)? What are the most important antenna concepts? What are the common antenna types? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each antenna type? How do the impedances of the transmitter, receiver and antenna cables effect the performance of antennas? What are transmission lines?
