Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- evaluating navigational information derived from ARPA in order to make and implement command decisions for ensuring safe navigation
- fundamentals of radars and ARPA equipment performance, limitations, errors, operation and use of ARPA

Content

- fundamentals of radar technology
- ARPA features, performance and requirements
- ability to operate, interpret and analyse information from radar incl. measuring techniques and errors and plotting
- simulation exercises and demonstration of competence in the simulator

Evaluation

Students can:
- use professional vocabulary and concepts in an expert way in different situations
- evaluate information sources critically
- choose appropriate models, methods, software and techniques according to the purpose and justify these choices

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code tables A-II/1 and A-II/2 columns 4 are used:
- information obtained from radar and ARPA is correctly interpreted and analysed, taking into account the limitations of the equipment and prevailing circumstances and conditions
- action taken to avoid a close encounter or collision with other vessels is in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea incl. manoeuvring signals
- decisions to amend course and/or speed are both timely and in accordance with accepted navigation practice
- adjustments made to the ship’s course and speed maintain safety of navigation
- communication is clear, concise and acknowledged at all times in a seamanlike manner

- Introduction to simulator training

- Simulator training at the operational level 1
- Simulator training at the operational level 2
- Simulator training at the management level 1
- Approved training during studies

Further information

Participation in all lessons and training sessions is obligatory.

IMO model courses 1.07 and 1.08 are utilized in course implementation.
