Objective

Students can communicate by paying attention to the requirements set by the receivers, situations and the professional field. They can also communicate in an understandable and convincing way, with logical arguments and in a way that promotes health. Students can follow the reporting guidelines of the UAS and observe the requirements of data protection and copyright. They also have sufficient skills of acquiring information, producing texts and handling related communication technology that are required during studies and at work and in its development. Students can work with initiative and in a goal-oriented and collaborative way during studies and in future expert duties and in multidisciplinary networks. Students can assess the quality of professional language use and health-related communication and learn the meaning of communication as an asset of the work community.

Content

How to improve the skills in searching for information, using office applications and how to adopt the UAS reporting guidelines and electronic learning environments? How to find, assess and apply information needed in studies and at work? How to produce texts of good quality for the study and working life related purposes? How to use the language professionally and in a goal-oriented way by emphasizing the most relevant points? How to work in a goal-oriented an collaborative way in presentation, negotiation, meeting and decision-making situations?

Qualifications

Attending the course requires independent language user’s skill level from both native speakers of Finnish and students who use it as their second language.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

a) Students can use professional vocabulary ofstudy-related and in-company communication systematically. b) Students can search for reliable and up-to-date information and make use of it in studies and work in its development. c) Students can produce different types of academic and professional texts of good quality by making use of communication technology and by following ethical principles. d) Students’ cooperation in groups, work communities and multidisplinary teams promotes collaboration and achieving goals. e) Students can assess the quality of healt-related communication and the professionalism of the language use. In addition, the assessment of UAS language studies bases the Common European Frame of Reference and the skill level descriptions drafted by Finnish UAS’s for the assessment of Finnish.
