Objective

You know the basic targets as well as the economic and environmental aspects of waste management. You are familiar with the possibilities for waste reduction and the techniques used in waste management, reuse and recycling. You can describe the techniques used for hazardous waste treatment as well as the recovery of materials and energy from waste. You know the main features of national and international guidance and regulations concerning waste management.

Content

What is the priority aim in waste management?
How can you know the environmentally best techniques to treat waste?
What kind of waste is not suitable to be taken to landfills? How are they treated, then?
Is waste incineration dangerous?
Who owns the waste and pays for it? How can one benefit from waste?

Submission dates for assignments are announced in the beginning of the course.

The time for the possible field trip to Metsäsairila waste management facility is announced in the beginning of the course.

Student workload

5 ECTS cu equals about 135 hours of student work.

Content scheduling

The first half of the course (11.1.-28.2.2021) is completed as online studies covering the topic "Municipal Solid Waste Management in Circular Economy".
The second half (8.3.-30.4.2021) of the course will consist of lectures (possibly online), assignments and project work.

Evaluation is based on completed assignments. More information on these is given in the beginning of the course.
