Objective

Knowledge, understanding and proficiency of STCW table A-II/2 function: Navigation at the management level. This course concentrates on learning the following competencies:
- plan a voyage and conduct navigation
- determine position and the accuracy of resultant position fix by any means
- determine and allow for compass errors
- coordinate search and rescue operations
- establish watchkeeping arrangements and procedures
- maintain safe navigation through the use of information from navigation equipment and systems to assist command decision making
- maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making
- forecast weather and oceanographic conditions
- respond to navigational emergencies
- manoeuvre and handle a ship in all conditions
- operate remote controls of propulsion plant and engineering systems and services.

Content

This course contains supervised simulator exercises, which are based on previously completed theory studies. These exercises have been grouped to form the following simulator training days, which have different themes:
- plan voyages and conduct navigation
- pilotage situations, MRM and leadership skills
- search and rescue operations
- ship towing operations
- ship handling, berthing and unberthing in different conditions
- respond to navigational emergencies
- competence test.

Evaluation

Students can
- work as team members in working life expert duties and identify and describe the problems of the professional field.
- choose appropriate models, methods, software and techniques according to the purpose and justify these choices.
- promote teams’ goal-oriented operation.
- apply critically the ethical principles of the professional field in different situations.
