Objective
According to STCW A-III/1:
Knowledge, understanding and proficiency of:
- Internal combustion engines, diesel cycle, working principles and constructions of diesel engines.
- Basic calculations and concepts.
- Principles of marine diesel engines and their exploitation as prime movers of propulsion and in electric power production.
- Auxiliary equipment and systems of marine diesel engines.
- Practical operation procedures and monitoring of diesel engines during engineering watch.
- Basic principles of maintenance and servicing of marine diesel engines and auxiliary equipment.
Content
Theory of internal combustion engines and primarily diesel engines, engine constructions and concepts including associated basic calculations.
Basic types of marine diesel engines; trunk piston engines and crosshead engines.
Auxiliary equipment, systems and devices of engines.
Most common monitoring and maintenance methods as well as safety at work when servicing marine diesel engines.
Evaluation
Students can

Study forms and methods
Scheduled track:
You will attend teaching and guidance sessions as specified in the schedule.
Independent track:
You attend your study in the multi-mode education. Degree of Deck Officer, operational level (STCW A-II/1) OR Degree of Engineer Officer, operational level (STCW A-III/1) OR Certificate of Competency: Deck Officer / Engineer Officer IS REQUIRED.
Blended track:
Discussion with the teacher and, where appropriate, PSP-planning with your own mentor teacher.
Timing of exams and assignments
Registration to any general exams has to be agreed with the lecturer and exams are to be completed according degree regulation.
