Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- main ship machineries, including basics of construction and operation principles
- basics in a propulsion, electric production and steam production onboard ship
- conduct safe boiler watch as a rating

Content

- terms used in machinery spaces and names of machinery and equipment
- propulsion systems
- electric power production and distribution onboard
- steam boilers
- steering gear
- deck machinery
- safe work procedures and environmental protection
- maintenance of ship machinery by engine rating

Evaluation

Students can
- use professional vocabulary systematically
- look for information in the key information sources of the field
- identify interrelated tasks

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-III/4 column 4 are used:
- communications are clear, concise and acknowledged in a seaman-like manner
- advice or clarification is sought from the officer of the watch where watch information or instructions are not clearly understood
- assessment of boiler condition is accurate and based on relevant information available from local and remote indicators and physical inspections
- the sequence and timing of adjustments maintains safety and optimum efficiency
