Objective

After you have completed the course you
- know the basics of colour and optics theory
- can identify the most common natural pigments using analysis charts and indication reactions
- can measure colour spectra with a spectrophotometer
- can identify the spectra of the most common pigments using reference spectra
- know the basics of organic chemistry
- understand the connection between basic chemistry knowledge and materials in conservation and restoration and their properties
- know the basics of XRFanalysis and know how to measure XRF spectra of samples and compare these to reference spectra.

Content

- What are colours, optics and natural pigments in theory?
- What kind of pigments exist?
- How to measure reference pigments with spectrophotometer and how to interpret the spectra?
- How to make a pigment analysis in a laboratory?
- What are the basics of organic chemistry?
- What are the most important organic material groups in conservation and restoration?
- How to use an XRF analyzer in material research?

Opiskelumateriaali

Luentomateriaali jaetaan opiskelijoille opintojakson Learn-alustan kautta. Pigmenttikansioiden tekoon opiskelija hankkii itse kansion, akvarellipaperia ja muovitaskuja.

Yksilölliset oppimisväylät

Scheduled track:
Teaching organized according to timetable, in addition to working order share of the independent work as agreed.

Independent track:
The learning process that has been integrated into the work will be possible if in your assignments you can develop the know-how that has been mentioned in the objectives and contents of the study module. Contact the teacher of the study module before the beginning of the study module in good time to determine it
• is the learning process that has been integrated into the work possible in your own assignment
• what kind evidence you are able to give from your know-how
• witch parts of the study module you have to participate in teaching
