Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- maritime information sources needed in passage planning
- using maritime charts and publications when preparing passage plans
- using and interpreting shipboard meteorological instruments and shore-based meteorological information

Content

Route planning:
- relevant regulations
- charts, sailing directions, publications
- passage plans

Meteorology:
- atmosphere
- wind
- sky and precipitation
- visibility
- pressure systems
- weather charts and forecasts
- weather information services

Evaluation

Students can
- use professional vocabulary systematically
- look for information in the key information sources of the field
- use the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field
- justify their actions according to the ethical principles of the professional field

In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code table A-II/1 column 4 are used:
- the information obtained from nautical charts and publications is relevant, interpreted correctly and properly applied. All potential navigational hazards are accurately identified
- the charts selected are the largest scale suitable for the area of navigation and charts and publications are corrected in accordance with the latest information available
- measurements and observations of weather conditions are accurate and appropriate to the passage
- meteorological information is correctly interpreted and applied
