Objective

You are able to actively use the basic professional vocabulary of your field.
You are able to look for information in English in professional sources and apply it in different study and work related communication situations.
You are able to communicate in English in various spoken and written situations in your professional field at the European level B2.

Content

What professional vocabulary is essential in your professional field?
How to look for information in professional sources in English and how to apply this information?
How to interact in spoken communication situations in English and how to draw up texts in English for professional purposes?
How to communicate in study-related situations and work communities in English?

Materials

The course platforms are comprised of Teams and/or Zoom and Learn. Text, audio and video materials are shared through these channels. Due to copyright agreements, some materials may only be available during real-time online sessions. Some of the study material may be produced by the participants.

Teaching methods

In this implementation, studying is scheduled around real-time online sessions announced at the beginning of the course and independently completed assignments.
A work-integrated study path is possible if your work involves tasks that meet the objectives and contents of the course. Contact the teacher of the course in advance to discuss
• whether your current work promotes the choice of a work-integrated path,
• how you could demonstrate your competence, and
• which parts of the course you may need to complete.
In order to expedite your studies, you can, for example, register for an implementation scheduled earlier than the one intended for your study group.

Exam schedules

The completion of the course requires an on-campus examination via Exam system. The exam can be taken in the premises of any higher education institution participating in the Exam system. In accordance with the decision made by the Pedagogical Management Team in September 2023, in mandatory language courses an exam via Exam system can be required of students also in online degree programmes.

Student workload

The student's maximum workload during a 5-credit course equals 135 hours. In effect, the amount of work depends e.g. on the prior English skills level and knowledge of IT vocabulary. The number of online sessions varies between 4 and 6, and the schedule is announced at the start of the course. The amount of mandatory participation in online sessions is announced at the start of the course.

Further information

The course is instructed in English. The focus is on the terminology and concepts that are essential in the field, as well as on the vocabulary and communication conventions generally needed and expected in work-related situations. In addition, the objective is to prepare students for the standards required in academic writing and technical reporting. All along the way, the aim is also to improve general English learning skills and the use of learning aids.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing in various situations in the professional field mainly at the European (CEFR) level B1.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing in various situations in the professional field mainly at the European (CEFR) level B2.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing in various situations in the professional field mainly at the European (CEFR) level C1.

Assessment methods and criteria

The completion of and assessment in the course are based on the student's active participation and completion of the mandatory assignments by the deadlines announced at the beginning of the course.

Some of the assignments in the course are assessed on a pass/fail basis and some on a scale of 1 to 5.

The mandatory assignments are typically comprised of various written assignments, real-time online presentation on Teams and recorded pair/small-group communication situation.

Qualifications

If you have been instructed to participate in the Intensive course in English, you must complete it or independently acquire the equivalent knowledge and skills before you can participate in this course.
