Master’s Degree Programme in Process Automation Project Activities

Objective

This course is aiming at creating an overview of process automation design, its parts and phases. The main points of interest are selecting instruments and connecting them to control systems. In addition, important points of interest are control logic and feedback control principles, motor control, and programming principles in PLCs and DCSs. The course includes a core content part of 40 %, and an additional part of 60 % concerning in-work learning and personal projects related to the core content topics. After completing the course, participants are capable to
• select and document commonly used instruments to basic automation loops
• design and document connecting instruments and motors using analogue and digital data transfer
• describe the properties of advanced control and identify the need of advanced control algorithms
• explain programming principles based on macro blocks, at least in one DCS
• work out simple PLC control logic applications based on combination logic
• specify main hardware and software principles of safety automation.

Content

How do we understand the design fields instrumentation design and system design?
Which components are needed in automation networks?
How do we work out clear, text-based functional loop descriptions and functional diagrams?
When do we need advanced control algorithms, and when is simple control logic or PID control feasible?
How do we design macro block based applications in distributed control systems (DCS)?
How do we design control logic applications in programmable logic controllers 8PLC)?
