Objective

This course is aiming at creating an overview of process automation, its documentation, control activities, and instrumentation and control system hardware. The course includes a core content part of 40 %, and an additional part of 60 % concerning in-work learning and personal projects related to the core content topics.

After completing the course, participants are capable to
• identify automation based on PI diagram tags
• analyse the working principle of control logic and feedback control loops
• justify and choose feasible measurement principles and actuators to process locations
• understand essential application fields of programmable logic controllers (PLC)
• present common system topologies of distributed control systems (DCS) as system diagrams, and explain application fields of these systems.

Content

How do we identify measurement, closed control, on-off valve, on-off motor and open control loops in PI diagrams?
When is control logic enough, and when do we need closed loop control?
What kinds of measurement principles are used in basic measurements of process industries, and where are they applicable?
When do we use pumps, fans, valves, heating elements, and which actuators are needed for them?
What kinds of assessment results lead to the usage of programmable logic controllers, and how do we connect field devices to them?
When are distributed control systems useful, and how do we connect field devices to them?
