Opiskelumateriaali

Study material is given on the Learn platform in the form of text documents and links, and audio and video links. In addition, Teams is used. Due to copyright restrictions, some of the material may only be available during online sessions.

Yksilölliset oppimisväylät

This implementation is structured and scheduled around real-time online sessions announced during the first weeks of the course and independent learning tasks.

• During the course, you must participate at least 3 times in real-time oral practice on Teams, give a real-time presentation via Teams and take a supervised exam via the Exam system in the examinarium of one of the universities participating in the Exam visit program. Apart from that, students progress independently online. Instructions related to the Exam program are available on Lux.
• On some tasks, students receive personal feedback, on some other tasks they receive general feedback, and some tasks are simply marked as completed.
• To earn the credits, the student must complete all mandatory assignments, take the exam and participate in the required number of real-time exercise sessions on Teams..
• Independent study is very loosely scheduled, and the student can complete compulsory assignments at their own pace until the end of the course.

The completion of the course requires an on-campus examination via the Exam system. The exam can be taken in the premises of any higher education institution participating in the Exam system. In accordance with the decision made by the Pedagogical Management Team in September 2023, in mandatory language courses an exam via the Exam system can be required of students also in online degree programmes.

The student's maximum workload during a 5-credit course equals 135 hours. In effect, the amount of work depends e.g. on the prior English skills level and knowledge of IT vocabulary. The total number of online learning sessions is 6, and the schedule is announced at the start of the course. The amount of mandatory participation in online sessions is announced at the start of the course.

Further information

The course is instructed in English. The focus is on the terminology and concepts that are essential in the field, as well as on the vocabulary and communication conventions generally needed and expected in work-related situations. In addition, the objective is to prepare students for the standards required in academic writing and technical reporting. All along the way, the aim is also to improve general English learning skills and the use of learning aids.

Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing in various situations in the professional field mainly at the European (CEFR) level B1.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing in various situations in the professional field mainly at the European (CEFR) level B2.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing in various situations in the professional field mainly at the European (CEFR) level C1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment is based on the completion of the written and oral mandatory assignments, presentation and exam.

Some of the assignments in the course are assessed on a pass/fail basis and some on a scale of 1 to 5.

The mandatory assignments are typically comprised of various written assignments, real-time online presentation on Teams and recorded pair/small-group communication situation.

If you have been instructed to participate in the Intensive course in English, you must complete it or independently acquire the equivalent knowledge and skills before you can participate in this course.
