Objective
General learning outcomes
- accepted completion of the course in each material workshop gives the right to work independently at the workshops.
- you can use the machines, equipment and hand tools of the workshops.
- you are able to make an active contribution to the development of the working environment.
- you are familiar with the structure, properties and ways of working in the workshop in question.
- you are able to identify the most common materials and their basic properties.
- you learn to follow development in the field and can continuously develop your material skills.
The content of courses included in the module vary, depending on the field of study.
Content
How to use tools, machines and devices safely and keep them in good condition?
How to identify the most important properties of materials?
How to design aesthetic and suitable objects and products while using material responsibly?
Evaluation
Students can
- apply the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field
- work as team members in a goal-oriented way
- justify their actions according to the ethical principles of the professional field.
Course material
Available in Learn platform. Possibly different books, articles etc. which the teacher will hand out. Students need basic equipments for sewing, pattern drafting and painting/drawing. Teacher will give more detailed list.

Studies can follow different tracks depending on students’ situations in life. There are three different tracks for the studies: scheduled track, independent track and blended track

RDI and work-related cooperation
Outside worklife related projects are not emphasized in this course.
Timing of exams and assignments
The course includes several assignments and an exam. Teacher will give more detailed timetable as the course begins.
International cooperation
International projects are not emphasized in this course.
Student workload
10 credits equals about 270h of work - approximately 8 weeks. The course includes partly guided workshop type work and lectures and partly independent working.
Course part description
10 credits are divided as follows:
- fiber and textile understanding 3 credit points
- professional sewing basics, machines etc. 2 credit points
- pattern drafting basics 2 credit points
- fabric dying and printing 3 credit points
Further information
Basic equipments students will need are:
- ruler for pattern drafting with 1/4 scale measure
- set of curved pattern drafting rulers
- mechanical pen and thin stabilo type marker in red and blue
- glass headed tailor's pins and hand sewing needles
- fabric scissors
- measuring tape with cm scale
- pen, chalk etc. designed for fabric marking
- painters tape
- clear tape
