Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- controlling fire-fighting operations aboard ships
- organizing and training of fire fighting parties
- inspecting and servicing fire-detection and fire-extinguishing systems and equipment
- investigating and compiling reports on incidents involving fire
Content
- fire-fighting procedures at sea and in port, emphasis on organization, tactics and command
- use of water in fire-extinguishing, the effect on ship stability, precautions and corrective procedures
- communication and coordination during fire-fighting operations
- ventilation control, including smoke extraction
- control of fuel and electrical systems
- hazards in fire-fighting processes (dry distillation, chemical reactions, boiler uptake fires, etc.)
- fire-fighting involving dangerous goods
- fire precautions and hazards associated with the storage and handling of materials (paints, etc.)
- evacuation and management of injured persons
- procedures for coordination with shore-based fire fighters
- preparation of contingency plans
- composition of plans, lists and diagrams and allocation of personnel to fire parties
- strategies and tactics for controlling fires in various parts of the ship
- fire-detection systems; fixed fire-extinguishing systems; portable and mobile fire-extinguishing equipment, including appliances, pumps and rescue, salvage, life-support, personal protective and communication equipment
- requirements for statutory and classification surveys
- assessment of the cause of a fire
The course includes a three-day advanced fire-fighting practical exercise at a certified fire training centre.

Further information
STCW Advanced Fire Fighting is a 3-day training course for vessel officers. The first day includes iteration of fire extinguishing techniques and extinguishing exercises using different methods. On the second day, the trainees brush up on the operating principles and maintenance of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). During the day they carry out search, rescue, and extinguishing exercises. At the end of the course, the trainees prepare an extinguishing and rescue plan that is implemented in an exercise on operation and leadership.
