Objective
- The student use English in written and oral form.
- The student will improve her/his competence in professional English communication in her/his field.
- S/he will have a better command of field-related terminology and practise English communication in expert tasks.
- After completing the course, the student is able to accurately describe maintenance procedures with regards to the main propulsion machinery and auxiliary engines, discuss matters related to personal occupational safety, compose a spare part order and discuss the future of marine technology and seafaring from the perspective of marine engineering.
- The student is able to adjust her/his style of communication according to the situation and the other party, as well as the language skills of the people participating in the communication.

Opiskelumateriaali
Study material is given on the Learn platform in the form of text documents and links, and audio and video links. In addition, Teams is used. Due to copyright restrictions, some of the material may only be available during classroom exercise.
Yksilölliset oppimisväylät
This implementation is structured and scheduled around weekly classroom exercise and independent learning tasks.
• The student must achieve at least a 51-percent attendance record in classroom exercise (i.e. attend more than half of the scheduled classes).
• On some tasks, students receive personal feedback, on some other tasks they receive general feedback, and some tasks are simply marked as completed.
• To earn the credits, the student must complete all mandatory assignments, take the exam and achieve the required attendance in classroom exercise.
• There are three mandatory written assignments in the course.

There is no exam in this course.
Opiskelijan työmäärä
The student's maximum workload during a 2-credit course equals 54 hours. In effect, the amount of work depends e.g. on the prior English skills level and knowledge of field-specific vocabulary. The total number of classroom exercise sessions is usually 7.

Contribution of assignments and exam to the grade:
One mandatory assignment is assessed on a pass/fail basis, and both of the other two assignments have a 50-percent contribution.
Further information
The course is instructed in English. The focus is on the terminology and concepts that are essential in the field, as well as on the vocabulary and communication conventions generally needed and expected in work-related situations. In addition, the objective is to prepare students for the standards required in academic writing and technical reporting. All along the way, the aim is also to improve general English learning skills and the use of learning aids.

Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment is based on the completion of the written mandatory assignments.
One of the mandatory assignments in the course are assessed on a pass/fail basis and two on a scale of 1 to 5.
Qualifications
Participation in this course requires that the student has completed the courses Maritime English 1 and Maritime English 2, or is simultaneously completing them.
