Objective

You can perform calculations using different representations of numbers.
You can present arguments in a valid manner.
You can combine sets algebraically.
You are able to utilize sequences and series, and understand combinatorics.

Content

How are numbers represented in different number systems, and how are they used in calculations?
What is logic and valid reasoning?
How are sets and relations defined, combined, and described?
How does abstract algebra, especially Boolean algebra, function?
How are sequences and series utilized?
How do combinations and permutations function in problem solving?

Course material

Course handout (PDF), other electronic material, and web materials, which will be published on the course's learning platform. The exercises and their model answers will be provided to students during the weekly exercises.

Study forms and methods

The teaching will be conducted as in-person instruction, meaning the student will participate in on-site activities according to the schedule. The student will complete the required exercises for the course as per the timeline, prepare to present their solutions in weekly exercises, and take part in midterm exams during the course. The course can also be completed solely through an exam.

Alternative methods of completion must be agreed upon with the course instructor before the course begins.

RDI and work-related cooperation

This course does not include RDI (Research, Development, and Innovation) or workplace collaboration.

Timing of exams and assignments

Weekly exercises are completed and returned before given deadlines. Late submissions are not accepted. Dates for midterms and/or exams are set in collaboration with students.

Student workload

The scope of the course is 5 credits, which means a total of 135 hours of student work. Of this, approximately 55 hours are guided work and 75 hours independent work.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment is based on attendance and participation in the course, successfully completed exercises and the points earned from them, as well as mid-term exams or solely the final exam.
