English for health care and social services (5 cr)

Objective

The students can communicate understandably in English in different kinds of written and spoken language situations of the field. The students improve their English skills and know how to use English language materials relevant to higher education studies.

Content

The course includes the basics of the English language. It also offers the chance to practice different field-related oral and written communication situations and to increase the courage to use the English language. An essential target is to produce clear, logical and readable texts in different styles. The material used in spoken and written tasks is related to the field of health care and social services, such as the concepts, service systems, various working life situations and ethics. In addition, the students develop their language learning techniques (e.g. reading professional texts, studying vocabulary).

Course material

Study material is provided by the teacher or via the Learn platform.

Study forms and methods

The course includes online lessons almost every week. The lessons require active participation.

Studies are carried out on the Learn platform. Access to the platform opens on the starting day of the course. As a rule, scheduled online lessons are carried out via Teams. In addition to having an internet connection, the students must also have a video and audio connection during online lessons.

The assessed assignments are completed individually/in groups/in pars. The assignments must be submitted by the given deadlines.
Feedback is provided by different methods, in writing and/or orally. Also, peer feedback can be used.

Timing of exams and assignments

The end date of the course is presented in the course details. By this date, the student must submit all assignments, take the required exams and meet all other conditions set for an approved course completion.

Student workload

1 ECTS credits equals 27 hours of work by the student. In a 5-credit course, the student's total maximum workload is approximately 135 hours including lessons, group work and independent study.

PASS
Student has achieved the course objectives. Student is able to identify and use the course subject area’s concepts and to put to use his/her knowledge and skills.

FAIL
Student has not achieved the course objectives. Student is able to identify and use only a few course subject area’s concepts and cannot put to use his/her knowledge.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student’s performance is assessed with reference to the learning objectives and assessment criteria of the course. The course completion requires that all assignments are assessed with a passing grade.

The assessment scale: pass/fail.
