Objective

Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- construction of survival craft and rescue boats and their equipment and characteristics
- effective use of survival craft and rescue boats before and after abandoning ship, also in rough conditions, including the use and maintenance of engines and launching/recovery equipment
- methods and procedures for promoting one's own and others' survival and detectability in survival craft and rescue boats

- construction and equipment of survival craft and rescue boats
- characteristics and facilities of survival craft and rescue boats
- types of devices used for launching survival craft and rescue boats
- methods of launching survival craft into a rough sea
- procedures for recovering survival craft
- action to be taken after abandoning ship
- methods of launching and recovering rescue boats in a rough sea
- hazards associated with the use of on-load release devices
- maintenance procedures
- procedures of starting and operating a survival craft engine and its accessories, and the use of fire extinguishers
- handling of survival craft in a rough weather
- use of the painter, sea-anchor and other equipment
- rationing of food and water in a survival craft
- action to be taken to maximize the detectability of a survival craft
- procedures in helicopter rescue
- effects of hypothermia and its prevention; use of protective covers and garmets including immersion suits and thermal protective aids
- use of rescue boats and motor lifeboats for guiding liferafts and rescuing people from the water

- radio life-saving appliances carried in survival craft including satellite EPIRBs and SARTs
- pyrotechnic distress signals
