Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- cargo handling, stowage and securing
- loading and discharging planning and execution
- cargo mass and volume calculation
- inspecting and reporting defects and damage to cargo- and ballast spaces and hatch covers
Content
- basics of cargo handling
- cargo transportation and regulations
- effects of cargo on the stability and seaworthiness of the ship incl. horizontal strain-forces
- square weights focusing on the bearing surfaces of the cargo, spot strains and strains on the cargo securing during the voyage
- cargo planning, handling, stowage and calculations: principals and effects on safety of life and ship
- securing cargoes
- effective communications during loading and unloading
- looking for damage and defects due to: loading/ unloaging operations, corrosion and severe weather conditions
- ship inspection practices: identifying critical structures, scheduled surveys and “enhanced survey programme”
- corrosion in cargo spaces and ballast tanks: causes, identification and prevention

Yksilölliset oppimisväylät
Scheduled track:
You will attend teaching and guidance sessions as specified in the schedule. Different types of cargo familiarization, their transportation and mounting of the requirements of the sea. Training tasks in class.

Discussion with the teacher and, where appropriate, PSP-planning with your own mentor teacher.

There are no ECTS points for RDI. Lectures by the external expert: Finnlines port inspector's two lectures and Finnlines cargo plans making on NAPA.
Tentit ja muut määräajat
The course will include various cargo handling related tasks, cargo plan on NAPA Loading computer programs and end exam.

Opiskelijan työmäärä
The course is 3 e.p., it is about 63 hours, in the class for theory study and practice we spend 42 hours and 6 h of practice on NAPA Loading computer, the rest for self-study and assignments of practice.
Further information
The course includes Finnlines port inspector training in cargo handling and lashing on RoRo vessels. Making the Finnlines cargo plane in the same way as on board, in NAPA's cargo program.
