Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- use of celestial bodies to determine the ship’s position
Content
- astronomy fundamentals of navigation
- systems of coordinates
- hour angles
- calculation methods for different celestial bodies
- use of the sextant
- use of the astronomical tables
- determination of the position of the vessel with the help of meridian passage of celestial object

Opiskelumateriaali
Study materials are in the Learn. Thbook by Tom Canliffe: "Celestial navigation" at the library and PDF version in Learn.
Yksilölliset oppimisväylät
Scheduled track:
You will attend teaching and guidance sessions as specified in the schedule. Lecture hours and calculations in class, training of the sextant use outdoors.
Independent track:
n/a
Blended track:
Discussion with the teacher and, where appropriate, PSP-planning with your own mentor teacher.
TKI ja työelämäyhteistyö
There are no ECTS points for RDI. During the course we practice the sextant use outdoors and in the auditorium. Many interesting practical measures of open sea astronomical navigation will come up on the course.
Tentit ja muut määräajat
Tasks and exam performance time will be adjusted during the teaching hours, because the times of the exercises depend on the weather condition and possibilities for the practice using of the sextant outdoors.
Kansainvälinen yhteistyö
No collaboration
Opiskelijan työmäärä
The scope of the course is 2.5 p. It is about 2.5 x 21 h = 52.5 h. Most of the studies we complete in the class, about 39 h. About 13.5 h is for self-study.
Further information
Course completion requires 100% attendance.
