Objective
Students
- understand the importance of bridge team work in piloting
- become familiar with piloting procedures and archipelago navigation in practice
- have ability to conduct passage plans for piloting passages and evaluate the effectiveness of the plan
Content
- lectures and project study. including onboard observation
- pilotage legislation and pilot as a member of bridge team
- planning a pilotage voyage taking into consideration the resources of the bridge and ship and the importance of effective team work
- project reporting to a cooperating shipping company
Evaluation
Students can
- use professional vocabulary and concepts in an expert way in different situations
- work as team members in working life expert duties and identify and describe the problems of the professional field
- work together with customers, users and target groups
- promote teams’ goal-oriented operation
In addition, competence evaluation according to STCW code tables A-II/1 and A-II/2 columns 4 are used:
- the information obtained from nautical charts and publications is relevant, interpreted correctly and properly applied
- all potential navigational hazards are accurately identified
- the frequency and extent of monitoring of traffic, the ship and the environment conform with accepted principles and procedures
- a proper record is maintained of the movements and activities relating to the navigation of the ship
- responsibility for the safety of navigation is clearly defined at all times, including periods when the master is on the bridge and while under pilotage
- communication is clear, concise and acknowledged at all times in a seamanlike manner

Course part description
During the lectures, the student is introduced to the basics of piloting and the principles of ship steering, as well as bridge work in narrow coastal lanes.
During the possible excursion, the students familiarize themselves with the ship's practices and steering, as well as line piloting.
