Course material

The material compiled on the course's Learn page is based on the book:

• Insinöörin matematiikka, Tuomenlehto et al., 1st-5th editions, 2018.

The course can be completed solely using the material provided on the Learn platform, but the book can be purchased to support your studies.

Other useful material:

• Mathematical reference book (e.g. MAOL tables or Tekniikan kaavasto).

The mathematical reference book is not mandatory, but its acquisition is recommended as it can be utilized in nearly all mathematics and natural sciences courses within engineering studies.

Study forms and methods

• The course includes remote teaching over the internet as well as asynchronous work in an online environment. During the online teaching sessions, the instructor-led review of exercise problems takes place, while between sessions, students independently study theory videos prepared by the instructor. Participation in remote teaching is recommended but not mandatory. The remote teaching sessions are recorded for later review.
• Instructor guidance is available during remote teaching sessions and whenever needed via email.

RDI and work-related cooperation

Does not include

Timing of exams and assignments

At the end of the course, there is an online exam that will be available for completion at a separately agreed time.

A failed final exam can be retaken twice.

Student workload

• 1 credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of student work. However, the workload depends on the student's study skills and prior knowledge.
• In a 3-credit course, the student's workload is approximately 81 hours, of which about 20 hours consist of instructor-led exercise sessions according to the schedule. The remaining time is dedicated to independently watching (recorded) theory sections and completing exercises.

Course part description

The course reviews or strengthens mathematical skills for future courses. The content includes, for example, fractional expressions, power and root expressions, solving first- and second-degree equations, the concept of a function, and solving right triangles.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment is conducted based on the learning objectives and evaluation criteria of the course. The course grade is determined by the final exam result. The minimum score required to pass the final exam is one-third of the maximum score for the course (10 points out of 30).
