Objective
You learn to understand different pattern drafting methods and sizing tables used in clothing construction.
You learn how to work with body measurements and draft and adjust the most typical clothing patterns.
You learn the basics of clothing pattern drafting and are able to use and adapt these skills in future projects.
Content
How do you take the body measurements needed for pattern drafting?
How to draft and alter clothing patterns?
How to read and use professional pattern drafting instructions?
How to draft patterns for a new design?
Evaluation
Students can
a. use professional vocabulary and concepts proficiently.
b. manage appropriate methods of information search.
d. justify their actions in customer, user and target group situations.
e. apply the key models, methods, software and techniques of the professional field.
g. apply the ethical principles of the professional field according to the situation.
Course material
The study materials are primarily available on the course's Learn platform or from the course instructor. In addition to these, students can also use professional literature suitable for the course content.
Study forms and methods
In the Basics of Pattern Making course, students will familiarize themselves with garment pattern making. The course covers the theory of pattern making, and during in-person teaching sessions, various pattern making and drafting exercises are done on paper.
The core skills to be learned during the course include, for example, drawing a basic pattern based on body measurements and modifying the basic pattern into various finished patterns.
If possible, students will also be introduced to the basics of digital patterns and drafting. (More on this in the 2D/3D software course)
RDI and work-related cooperation
The course does not include separate workplace collaboration.
Timing of exams and assignments
The course assignments are evenly distributed throughout the course duration. Assignments are submitted either on a few agreed-upon dates during the course or as a single portfolio submission at the end of the course.
International cooperation
The course does not include international collaboration.
Student workload
The student's workload is calculated to be approximately 27 hours per 1 credit. In practice, this may vary depending on the student's prior knowledge and skill level. About half of the course consists of guided instruction, and the other half is independent work by the student.
Further information
Students will need the following pattern making tools for the course:
¼ scale ruler – preferably transparent
A set of small curve rulers
A sharp, erasable pencil – a mechanical pencil is good
Fine-tipped markers: black, red, blue – e.g., Stabilo
Pattern paper can be purchased by the meter from the school. Colored A4 paper sheets are a good addition when working on patterns in 1/3 scale on paper.
Evaluation scale
1-5
Assessment methods and criteria
The purpose of the separate learning tasks is to familiarize the student with a new skill required in the profession. The tasks assess the acquisition of these skills. Each task is evaluated individually, and the final course assessment for the student is based on the partial tasks and the student's demonstrated activity during the course.
Activity includes, among other things:
Participation in in-person teaching
Receiving guidance
Ability to work independently with goals
Ability to independently search for information
A constructive attitude towards learning
