Perioperative and surgical nursing (5 cr)

Objective

Evidence-based work and decision-making
• you know the most commonly used methods of anesthesia, their applications and basic techniques
• you understand the effects that illnesses which appear at various ages have on anesthesia and its planning
• you know/understand the physiology of pain
• You are able to assess, plan and administer medicine to surgical patients at the pre-, intra- and postoperative phases of treatment

Clinical nursing
• you are familiar with key operating methods in specialist surgery
• you are familiar with asepsis in your own work and patient care
• you are familiar with non-medicine treatment methods in nursing perioperative and surgical patients and with the basics of clinical care skills in the pre-, intra- and postoperative care phases
• you are able to identify the symptoms of surgical complications and treat the patient

Nursing ethics and professionalism
• you are able to work as part of a cross-disciplinary surgical team
• you are able to produce, share and utilize expert competence in cross-disciplinary teams, networks and partnerships
• you are familiar with ethical challenges and your obligations

Quality and safety in social and health care services
• you understand your professional duty to ensure and promote patient safety and (incl. electrical, radiation and gas safety)
• you are able to act responsibly in maintaining information security and data protection

The social and health care operating environment
• you are able to use key monitoring equipment required for perioperative and surgical nursing
• you are able to use the patient information system

Teaching and supervision
• you are able to guide the surgical (elective, day-surgery, acute surgery) patient so that she or he commits to his or her care and is able to act safely and in a manner that promotes rehabilitation
• you recognize the significance of relatives and close ones in patient rehabilitation

Study forms and methods

Työviikkopohjainen oppimisväylä:
-Teoriaopinnot 3op (verkko-opiskelu itsenäisen aikataulun mukaisesti)
-Teoriaopinnot 2op (verkko-opiskelu ja tehtävät) TAI
-Harjoitukset 2 op Opintojen alussa kartoitetaan labroihin osallistujat eri kampuksilla. Kotkan kampuksella harjoitukset toteutuvat kun ilmoittautuneita on vähintään 10 opiskelijaa ja koko opintojaksolle on ilmoittautuneita vähintään 26. Harjoitukset peräkkäisinä päivinä 2-4 päivää ryhmäkoosta riippuen). Sitovat ilmoittautumiset lähiopetuksen suorittamisesta otetaan vastaan opintojakson alkaessa.
Savonlinnan kampus: Harjoitukset 2-4 päivänä ryhmäkoosta riippuen. Laboraatiot ovat: 12.8. - 14.8.2020.
