Objective
Knowledge and understanding of and proficiency in:
- basics in internal combustion engines, working principles and design
- auxiliary equipment and systems of marine diesel engines
- basic IC-engine concepts and general equations of design and performance
- principles of 2-stroke and 4-storke marine diesel engines and their exploitation as prime movers of propulsion and in electric power production
- operation procedures and monitoring of diesel engines as a watchkeeping officer
- basic maintenance and service tasks of marine diesel engines
Content
- theory of internal combustion engines and primarily diesel engines, engine constructions and concepts including associated basic calculations
- basic types of marine diesel engines; trunk piston engines and crosshead engines
- diesel engine as a prime mover in propulsion and electric generation
- auxiliary equipment, systems and devices of engines
- isolation of engines, and safety at work when servicing marine diesel engines
- most common monitoring and maintenance methods of diesel engines
- safety equipment and failure detection of diesel engines
