Objective

Students are able to communicate assertively in English in the professional context, paying attention to the demands of the situation, also in unexpected situations. The students are familiar with the main concepts of the field and can utilise their language skills in tasks requiring expertise. The target level is B2 in the European Framework (CEF) also in work-related situations. The prerequisite for the course is the completion of Maritime English course. After completion of the course students are able to evaluate their own learning, evaluate success of communication situations, and apply their skills in new situations are able to efficiently use language tools (eg. Internet dictionaries, search engines, and proof-reading tools) are able to adapt their communication style according to the situation, interlocutor, and language skills of participants. are aware of the impact of culture on communication have a command of the core English terminology relating to deck department operations and are capable of communicating verbally and in writing in demanding job-specific tasks can give a presentation on a demanding field-specific topic in English with consideration to the expectations of an international audience have a command of the English terminology relating to maritime occupational health and the environmental impact of seafaring are capable of drafting a technical report or e.g. spare part order in English can use expressions and structures typical of technical writing

Content

enhancing the command of English terminology relating to deck department operations meticulous and detailed study of the terminology relating to navigation bridge procedures and aids to navigation, and a presentation on a corresponding topic drafting a document or instruction manual using accurate technical style and terminology (e.g. written order or maintenance instruction) study of the English terminology relating to maritime occupational health and the environmental impact of seafaring analysing and writing technical reports summary writing other documents

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Description of targets of the assessment is given in the description of the implementation. Scale: Excellent (5), good (4-3), pass (2-1),  fail (0). Grades 3-5 require language skills in the European B2 level. In addition to the criteria for a pass grade specified in the course implementation description, active participation in the tuition is a prerequisite for passing a course.Active participation means that students attend 75% of the contact lessons unless the course implementation informs otherwise.  The language lecturers keep a record of attendance. A course that is failed due to excessive absence cannot be resat by retaking the exam. Instead, the student has to attend the course again. makes sure that they have the study material (e.g. the textbook) specified in the curriculum. take part in the contact lesson activities as instructed by the lecturer. complete the given homework and assignments on time according to the lecturer's instructions. If the course completion includes online assignments, frequent failure to meet the deadlines will lead to a failed course. The course that has been registered as “incomplete” due to missing online assignments cannot be resat by retaking the exam or sending the assignments by email. Instead, the online assignments must be completed in a new course implemention within 12 months.
