Objective

You know how to design digital archives and preservation processes. You are able to identify challenges of preserving of different kinds of data. You are familiar with different kinds of regulations concerning digital preservation and common quality requirements of different types of data. You learn about technologies used in digital preservation.

Content

What kind of factors have to be considered when designing digital preservation? Which regulations, standards and recommendations affect digital archiving? Which are the quality criteria for digitizing and the challenges in digital preservation?

Opiskelumateriaali

All materials are available through the Learn environment. All assignments are either completed directly in the Learn environment or submitted there according to the instructions specified in the assignments.

To complete the course assignments, students must have access to a computer on which they have permission to install software. The software required for the course is provided to students as a VirtualBox virtual machine. To use this, the computer must be able to install the VirtualBox software and have at least 30GB of free disk space and preferably at least 8GB of RAM

Yksilölliset oppimisväylät

The course is primarily conducted as independent study in the Learn environment, but it includes two 1.5-hour guidance sessions, the dates of which will be announced later.

No part of the course is mandatory, but the student is responsible for earning enough points from the course assignments

The course includes content and methods from RDI (Research, Development, and Innovation) projects.

The course touches on the international collaboration conducted by the Digitalia research center and utilizes various software developed as a result of this international cooperation.
