Typical job titles for a graduate of degree programme in Electricity and automation technology are e.g. electrical and automation designer, project engineer, site manager, operations manager, prod-uct manager, marketing engineer or teacher. After you have graduated, you have the option to apply for master’s degree studies at Xamk Master School. The eligibility for master’s degree studies requires that you hold a relevant bachelor’s degree and have the minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience after the graduation. The master's de-gree studies in Electrical and automation technology concentrate on electric power technology.

Degree programme learning outcomes

The common knowledge in a Bachelor's degree consists of the following areas of expertise: learning skills, ethical competence, working community competence, innovative competence and interna-tionalization competence. The field-specific knowledge in Electrical and automation technology de-gree programme are electrical safety, design expertise, automation technology, electrical drives and power plant expertise.

The core competence in Electrical and automation technology degree programme consists of deep knowledge of various electrical devices and systems as well as electric drives control. You will learn to understand phenomena of mathematics and natural sciences and apply these skills as tools in solving working life problems and development.

During your studies you will get a wide range of capabilities for various tasks of this field. This degree gives you the possibility to access the ‘Electrical qualification 1’. This qualification will be received af-ter completing a nationwide exam, and having enough work experience.

As supplementary studies you can choose elective courses and training through which you can deepen your expertise in building technology or expand your knowledge in Russian know-how or digitalisation.

Degree studies

Workplace pedagogy: Intensive collaboration with working life is an essential part of every degree programme. It is possible to integrate studies and work on different levels and in different ways. In addition to the traditional work placement and thesis writing, you can participate in different kinds of projects linked to the working life. The projects may be carried out together with students of your own field or other fields of study. Several research, development and innovation projects give you the possibility to connect your studies with tasks offered by the working life. You can also utilise your own workplace as a learning environment, provided that your work corresponds with your field of study (formalisation of learning). (hw, mk)

Both local and municipal power companies and public operators of the sector are actively involved in Electrical and automation technology degree programme. Various guest lecturers visit the lessons and the university has connections to local electricity companies. During the studies, you also visit many companies of this sector. In connection with the training and bachelor’s thesis you can ex-plore companies, practices and development in this field.

The week-based curriculum of Electrical and automation technology degree programme provides you with over three and a half years of classroom teaching under the supervision of professional in-structors. At the beginning of studies you acquire the basic skills in mathematics and natural science

required for technical studies and at the same time you start to become familiar with electrical and automation technology. Lectures include theoretical lectures and a lot of exercises, measuring and laboratory work, as well as a variety of group work and independent tasks.

As a student, you are responsible for the development of your skills. To support you in this process are all teachers and in particular, your group instructor and your thesis supervisor. You also have the opportunity to give feedback and to participate in developing education.

If desired, you have the opportunity to accelerate your graduation by including the thesis already in the fall schelude of the fourth year. Depending on your previously acquired skills you can complete part of your studies with another group, in which case the total duration of the studies may be even shorter. If you are working in the field during your studies, some of the studies can be integrated in your work tasks.

Assessment

The aim of the assessment is to support your learning and make it visible. The assessment is focused on the accumulation of knowledge, skills and competences. These are defined in the European and national frameworks of reference (EQF and NQF). Xamk uses an EQF and NQF application (assessment guidelines for students' know-how and skills (bachelor's level) in the assessment of your studies. Courses are assessed on a scale of Fail/1 - 5 or pass/incomplete. A grade of 1 is given for a satisfactory achievement.

The module assessment is conducted through qualitative methods, for example, self-assessment, peer assessment or assessment discussion led by the teacher. Modules are not assessed with grades. In-stead, the aim is to help you acknowledge the comprehensive development of you competencies.

Student counseling

Student counseling supports your professional growth in acquiring the skills necessary in the working life. The counselling supports you at the different stages of your studies and improves your individ-ual and independent learning skills. You are encouraged to make responsible and independent deci-sions in your studies.

Your personal study and career plans are build on the objectives of the degree programme and on the knowledge and skills acquired in the past. You will evaluate your progress and update your per-sonal study plan at counselling meetings that take place at least once a year. In these meetings, your career plan, course options, practical raining, thesis and international studies are discussed.

You do not need to study again what you already know. In order to save time, you can demonstrate and get a recognition for the previously acquired skills, allowing you to focus on learning new skills and gaining new knowledge from your studies. Prior learning is valuable and can be made visible through the recognition process. You can apply for the recognition process if you have acquired de-gree-related competence in other educational institutions. If you have acquired degree-related com-petence at work or in your free time, you can apply for a proficiency test. It is essential that the pre-viously acquired skills meet the aims of the degree programme and the particular course. Work ex-perience gained during studies can also produce relevant learning. This learning can be integrated into your studies (formalisation of learning at work) provided that you have made an appropriate plan and agreed on the integration in advance. In this way, work practice and theoretical knowledge interact.

A course called Professional Growth supports your studies allowing you to discuss and reflect on the goals and progression of your studies and grow professionally by interacting with other students and teachers. Partners from the working life have a significant role to play as part of the studies are im-plemented by means of co-operation projects, practical training and thesis writing.

At the early stages of your studies you will be guided by tutor students. These senior students will familiarise you with the study facilities, practices and student community at Xamk and show you around the city where you are studying.

Your well-being is very important for all of us. During your studies, you have the support of the en-tire Xamk staff. There is a student affairs office and student health care on all Xamk campuses. Xamk is a comfortable, communal and safe educational environment.

Learning environments

Xamk offers excellent facilities to support your learning. A significant part of studies take place out-side the classroom. Innovation and project environments (e.g. Xinno, Xentre, CampusIT and Logistiik-kaverstas Logistics Workshop), different kinds of simulation environments and teaching restaurants, eLearning environments and working-life and RDI projects will facilitate your learning. You can also conduct your studies in two authentic local environments: in the forest and at sea. (hw, mk)

In Electrical and automation technology degree programme you work mainly at Mikkeli Campus in modern class environments with modern electricity designing software. There are four separate la-boratory rooms with a wide range of software and new laboratory equipment. Laboratory facilities also have space for project work.

Teaching is supported by an extensive cooperation network. It is possible to carry out the tasks of practical projects in working life, as well as in R & D projects. In studies we use Moodle learning envi-ronment.

International perspective

The students of Xamk have good opportunities to gain international experience. Students have a possibility to study abroad in a partner institution of higher education or do practical training in a company/ organisation or do both. The length of the student exchange period is often one term, during the second or third year of the studies depending on the degree programme. The aim of the student exchange is to improve students’ abilities to work in ever increasing international market and find employment after graduation. Student exchange is essential for the activities of a high-quality educational institution, promoting the students’ professional growth and expertise. Along-side interesting courses, spending time abroad also brings you new experience, new friends, im-proves your language skills and increases your confidence. Xamk has a wide network of international partners. There are over 300 partners in almost 40 countries. It is possible to apply for student ex-change in every degree programme.

Being international at home means completing degree studies or part of them in English. The Eng-lish-language study groups include international students. Xamk has five degree programmes imple-mented entirely in English on bachelor level: Business Management, Information Technology, Envi-ronmental Engineering, Game Design and International Business. International Summer Term stud-ies are arranged in English between May and August. Being international at home is a good alterna-tive if student exchange is not possible.

In the strategy of Xamk, Russia expertise is defined as an area of specialisation. Therefore, the core studies of every degree programme include Russia studies related to the interests of the particular field. In addition, you may enhance your Russia expertise by choosing supplementary Russia stud-ies.The language studies available at Xamk, apart from the mandatory language studies, include Ger-man, Spanish, French and Russian. Each language can be studied for the extent of 5 to 15 ECTS cred-its. Versatile language skills make it easier to operate in the international field and are often a great advantage when applying for a job.The electricity sector is becoming more international all the time. Students are encouraged to study languages, participate in international exchanges and training with flexible and alternative arrange-ments. Quality evaluation and development

Quality is valued at Xamk, and the staff and all students are involved in the development process. The focus is on constantly improving the quality of teaching and councelling, keeping the learning environments interesting and the content of degree programmes relevant.

We collect a significant part of the feedback data used in the development processes with surveys targeted at our students, our staff and interest groups. As a student, you play an essential role in the development of your degree programme. During your studies, you respond to several surveys. The course feedback, both mid-term and end-term, is a part of the Quality Management System as well as the preliminary survey upon admission and the education development survey and the gradua-tion feedback questionnaire at the end of the studies.

The staff and the students discuss the feedback on different feedback forums, where they can agree on new actions and discuss the impact of earlier development measures. These forums serve as a means to voice the students’ opinions about Xamk operations and plans for development. The fol-lowing picture illustrates the path of the course feedback.

1. Sähkö- ja automaatiotekniikassa aloitetaan joka syksy insinööriopinnot päiväopintoina toisen asteen tutkinnon pohjalta. Näille opiskelijoille on tehty neljän vuoden opiskeluaikaan perustuva aikataulutus opintojen suorittamiseksi eli työviikkopohjaiseksi opiskeluksi.

Kunakin lukukautena suoritetaan noin 30 opintopisteen edestä opintoja, joihin sisältyy lä-hiopetusta keskimäärin 60 tuntia/5 opintopisteen opintojakso. Lähiopetusta on tarjolla elo-kuun lopusta huhtikuun loppuun saakka. Vain harvoissa opintojaksoissa on vaatimusta 100 %:n läsnäoloon, vaikkakin sitä suositellaan lämpimästi. Iso osa opinnoista tapahtuu itsenäisesti opiskellen erilaisten harjoitustöiden, oppimistehtävien ja tenttien parissa.

Joka toinen vuosi sähkö- ja automaatiotekniikkaan otetaan sisään myös monimuotoryhmä, jonka opiskelijat suorittavat opintojaan työn ohessa. Pohjakoulutusvaatimus tähän koulutukseen on sähköalan ammattitutkinto. Koulutukseen voi osallista muun alan amk-insinöörejä ja muun sähköalan insinöörejä, joiden opinnot alkavat vuotta myöhemmin. Tämän monimuotoryhmän lähiopinnot aikataulutetaan 2-4 lukuvuodelle. Opiskelijoille tarjotaan lähiopetusta noin kaksi kertaa kuukaudessa, 25 tuntia kerrallaan perjantai-illasta sunnuntaihin. Lähiopetusta annetaan noin 40 tuntia/ opintojakso. Sen lisäksi opiskelijan edellytetään tekevän opintojaksolla noin 100 tuntia itsenäistä työtä osaamistavoitteiden saavuttamiseksi.

2. Opintoja on mahdollista nopeuttaa. Opiskelijalle voidaan tehdä opintojen alussa henki-lökohtainen opintosuunnitelma. Siinä otetaan huomioon opiskelijan aiempi osaaminen. Riippumatta siitä, onko opiskelija päivä- vai monimuotoryhmässä, hän voi halutessaan ottaa opintoja kummastakin koulutuksesta. Tällöin opintojen aikataulua on mahdollista tiivistää. Osa opinnoista on myös mahdollista suorittaa verkko-opintoina.

Opinnäytetyölle on opetussuunnitelmassa varattu aikaa kokonainen lukukausi lähiopetuksen päättymisen jälkeen. Halutessaan opiskelija voi kuitenkin tehdä opinnäytetyönsä yhtä aikaa, kun osallistuu lähiopetukseen. Tällöin valmistumista on mahdollista aikaistaa jopa puoli vuotta.

3. Sähkö- ja automaatiotekniikassa on mahdollista yhdistää työssäkäyntiä ja opiskelua. Monimuoto-ryhmän opiskelu on lähtökohtaisesti suunniteltu työssäkäyntiin yhdistettäväksi. Lähiopetuksen aikataulutus mahdollistaa työn tekemisen.
Sekä päivä- että monimuoto-opiskelijat voivat esittää opintojen suorittamista työelämäprojektien kautta. Etenkin vaihtoehtoisten ammattiaineiden osalta tämä on hyvinkin mahdollista. Muidenkin ammattiaineiden osalta opiskelija voi osoittaa osaamisensa näytöllä, johon voi osana liittyä esimerkiksi työelämässä tehty, kyseiseen osaamisalaan liittyvä tehtävä. (not translated)
