Teaching methods

Scheduled track:
Student Union Kaakko opens application for about 250 tutors who are Xamk’s degree students and interested in tutoring for the academic year 2024-2025. Tutor trainings are organized from January until February on all four campuses. The more accurate timetables and programs for the training sessions will be announced to Xamk’s email when the application period ends. Tutoring course is recommended (starting) 2nd year degree students.

The course consists of face-to-face education and independent tasks (1 ECTS) and the actual tutoring (4 ECTS). There are two contact meetings March to April. Compulsory absences must be agreed separately. After completing common basic education 0,5 ECTS student will select specialization training 0,5 ECTS in which the student wishes to specialize. Selective specialization trainings are degree tutor, hobby tutor, international tutor, eTutor or wellbeing tutor. The student completes the remaining 4 ECTS credits by acting the next academic year as a tutor.

The content of basic education includes information about teamwork and small group skills, tutor’s responsibilities, Xamk’s guidance system, Xamk’s community, support sevices, tutoring plan, meeting responsible teacher / contact persons and planning of possible exams and orientation weeks. The topics of the second training day are related to the specialization training chosen by the student, for further information as the training progresses.

The course does not have research, development and innovation work or cooperation with working life.

Student workload

Tutoring:
• Degree tutors and responsible tutors in co-operation with responsible teachers (OVAs) (e.g. including participation in possible training sessions, entrance exams, orientation week planning, participation in tutorstart before orientation week, campus event).
• International tutors in co-operation with your own campus international coordinator.
• Hobby tutors in co-operation with your own campuses sports coordinator or a sports lecturer.
• eTutors in co-operation with student union Kaakko and student coordinators.
• Wellbeing tutors in co-operation with student union Kaakko.
